On 22nd September 2022, MET Institute of Pharmacy (Degree) welcomed alumni Ms. Afreen Khan, Assistant Professor, Bombay College of Pharmacy to conduct a lecture to help students understand the application of Machine Learning in in-silico modeling or computer aided drug design.
Ms. Khan explained the entire process of drug discovery, the theories on which drug and receptor binding is based (lock and key and induced conformation theory). She also did touch base other topics including validation of datasets, assessing models in machine learning and cross validation.
The students were also briefed on Artificial Neural Networks. Terms like structure based visual screening, descriptors, supervised learning, reinforcement learning, structure and ligand-based drug discovery, were also explained. Regression and classification algorithms in ML were demonstrated on google collab and jupyter. It was a very informative session for the final year students as they prepare for their research projects.
