Right Job, Right Company, Bright Future – Part I

PGDM Freshers who enter the corporate are apprehensive about what lies in store for them. Society has tagged the Business Management degree as a gateway to making a lot of money. The kind of monetary investment made by students for getting into a B-school is a clear indication of how strongly they want that degree for securing a well-to-do future. This objective works best when it is supplemented by acquiring intellectual and technical skills. From the institute's point of view, improving a wide set of skills as opposed to syllabus teaching is very important and is the call of the hour. Work experience is a much debatable topic as some companies prefer only PGDM graduates with prior work experience when it comes to the placement process. So those who have no work experience end up compromising on jobs concerning the desired profile and pay package.

Most of the students completing their PGDM course expect and completely focus on getting a six or seven figure salary. While some students with the right approach towards placements, manage to accomplish this, many others fail to get such placements thereby leading to disappointment, disillusion and dejection. It is therefore very important to prepare these students for facing the selection process of different companies. B-schools should refrain from making tall promises to students in terms of guaranteed placements, for filling up their seats. Also, students should not consider getting their dream job only because they have worked their backs off for scoring high grades while getting that coveted  PGDM degree. A lot depends on how they are assessed by recruiters.

Learning on the job is an inescapable part of every employee’s life. As Herzberg rightly mentioned in one of his lectures, Training has to be a part of every employee's learning experience on the job. Only if an employee is capable of doing the job, he can be motivated to do better. Another observation made by various companies is the baggage of theories, ethics and ideas taught by the teachers at the course, which students bring along with them to the job. Invariably these students end up re-learning many of their theoretical concepts once they start working.

Thus the institute must prepare the students as per the needs of the corporate. This will not only help the companies to hire the right students but in turn, will also help students to fit into the job they desire.
