MET-TERI: Bashing the Trash
With the theme 'Bashing the Trash' in minds on 9th January 2016 MET Rishikul Vidyalaya got an opportunity to welcome leading schools from Mumbai, the mission was how to create a cleaner n sustainable habitat. This is an initiative undertaken by TERI (The Energy and Resource Institute). Schools like Arya Vidya Mandir; Delhi Public School, S. M. Shetty, Indian Education Society (IES) whole heartedly participated in this event.
Eminent speakers like Mr. Rishi Aggarwal an environmentalist and social activist spoke about the scenario on Mangroves and how to conserve them. Mrs. Monisha Narke, an eco-entrepreneur (RUR) gave an insight into how segregation of waste in homes can reduce the volume of garbage at the landfills. This was followed by this many activities based on green environment such as Trash Couture where students had to design, wear and speak about their creation in which even MRV students participated; the event was judged by Mr. Paul Nair. Looking at their creation we all were amazed that waste can be so beautiful too.
Next event was 'Rang De Umbrella' where young minds with their imagination and colours converted a simple umbrella into an image of a Dream Mumbai which they want to live in. To encourage collaborative learning in participants, a group competition was arranged where students had to make half yearly Calendar based on Environment theme. Not only the students' enthusiasm was at its peak but also the enthusiasm of the parents and teachers was at its maximum. Green chef gave an opportunity to them to showcase how simple food habits can decrease the carbon foot print. Parallel workshop on 'Live Ayurvedic Cooking', 'Bottle Art', 'Clay Art' were a hit. This was followed by prize distribution where Dr. Sambhaji Mehetre, Scientific Officer in Nuclear Agriculture and Biotechnology Division from BARC honoured the winners. Overall, it was an event which was accomplished learning with a smile.
